Give Your Eyes the Care They Deserve

What To Do If You Have an Eye Emergency

close-up of eye

First things first. Don’t panic! Staying calm is the best way to help you think straight and help those around you to remain calm. Often, it’s not necessary to go to an emergency room for eye emergencies. In fact, the vast majority of people who go to the emergency room for eye care could have received treatment from their local optometrist instead.

If you’re unsure whether you’re experiencing an eye emergency, give us a call immediately! Delay may increase the risk of serious complications and may result in vision loss.

Until you see your eye doctor or seek urgent care, avoid the following:

  • Don’t try to remove an embedded object out of your eye
  • If your eye is injured, don't press on it or rub it
  • Dry cotton and sharp instruments such as tweezers should never be used on the eye.

Whether you've had a workplace accident or an at-home incident, our eye doctors are here to help

I will start by saying this is kind of a double sided review. Suzanne was not kind and had a very sn... ooty attitude. She sounds like she has no personality but the other office members were so kind to me about picking out glasses options. Jessica was always my go to, but Jake seems to be a great addition to the office. Not everyone can be perfect, but she really needs to watch her language in front of customers. Suzanne swore a lot and there were children there.

I came in towards the end of the day and Jake was kind enough to take his time and explain what cont... acts I could order. He was very knowledgeable and helped me understand my lens options as well. Keep up the good work!

My husband and I have been going here for many years, and I have recommended many! Always treated we... ll and always satisfied with their service! The doctors have been great there and the current one is friendly, explains any issues in eye exam very well, and I have nothing but good to say about Visionmakers! Jessica has been there a long time and is so personable (as well as all the other front office staff) and is always there to accommodate! They have an excellent warranty/exchange policy which we have had to use. I give them an A++++ Excellent rating!

I am so thankful that I took my son to Visionmakers to get fitted for contacts. Visionmakers class ... for contacts is a must have! Jess was so patient with him. He has anxiety and I wasn't sure if he would be able to do it on his own. Jess was amazing! The eye doctor and staff were very kind and professional.

This place is great! The staff was helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Very good attitudes. Profe... ssional. Clean. They have a good selection of frames/sunglasses to choose from. Lots of options. Sarah helped me schedule my appointment. She was very pleasant and helped me decipher my insurance. I left with all questions answered! Will definitely recommend.

I first received care from Visionmakers Pittsburgh a few days after they first opened their doors he... re, in early 2000 something. The fact that I still receive care yearly and sometimes more, is a testament to their high quality of professionalism, staff attitude, patient care and product. I have no other affiliation with any professional group in this area with whom I have remained with entirely because of their high quality of care and attitude. My visual issues are not particularly common, have worn glasses since I was 3 yo and now at age 78 there are several serious visual complication. On these more serious issues they do not provide the direct service but they are affiliated with these other medical groups and have done follow up exams to help tract the procedures performed by the Opthamologists. Then as my lens need changed because of these procedure they are always there to fully assist me. You all r appreciated.

Everyone including the doctor went out of their way to make my hubby, my daughter and myself very co... mfortable. Even fixed the nose pads on my glasses. Very friendly, informative and easy to be with. We are sure to let our friends know as well.

We have been coming to Visionmakers for almost 11 years and recommend every time anyone asks. Staff ... is by far the best!!

My family and I have been using vision-makers since they came to Pgh.We are very happy with the prof... essionalism of the entire staff. They are a 1-stop shop, very good and thorough exam, Dr on staff, the selection of eyewear is impressive they have a large selection of styles, which most are covered by my insurance. there is no pressure to sell upgrades or more expensive glasses, although if you want that they have it. Their Lab is located in Dayton Ohio, and the best part is they are a UNION SHOP.. Patrick McMahon Retired - ATU-Local 85

I’ve been going here for years. Always great service!

Through eye exams , great selection of frames for any activity plus great service.

My husband wanted to change to Visionmakers and I was extremely hesitant leaving my current optometr... ist of 15 years. I was pleasantly surprised! Everyone is professional and thorough. We've been going there for 3 years now and I never thought twice about looking back. I can't say enough good things about this practice. This is probably the second review I've ever written. It's not something I do often, but they deserve praise. They are fantastic and I recommend them highly.

Eye Emergencies FAQs

What is considered an eye emergency?

Eye emergencies are anything that may cause permanent damage to your eyes or vision without timely intervention from an eye care professional.

The most common types of eye emergencies include:

  • A blow, poke or other trauma to the eye
  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Chemical spills in the eye
  • Foreign object embedded in the eye
  • Sudden appearance of light flashes or floaters
  • Contact lens lost in the eye
Does an eye infection require urgent care?

Symptoms of an eye infection typically include itching, burning, redness, crusty and watery eyes. See a Pittsburgh eye doctor if your symptoms last over 4 days or if you experience intense pain, redness, blurred vision or light sensitivity.

What should I do if a foreign object enters my eye?

Most of the time, a person can easily remove debris from the eye by repeatedly blinking to get the debris out. If that doesn't work, you can wash your eye with saline (sterile salt water) to flush out any dust and dirt from your eye, or use streaming tap water.

However, to scratch your cornea while attempting to get an object out which can cause further site-threatening complications.

So the best thing you can do in this kind of eye emergency is to get to your eye doctor in Pittsburgh as soon as possible.
