Experiencing changes in vision, such as blurriness and eye floaters?

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading causes of vision loss around the world. Of an estimated 285 million people with diabetes mellitus worldwide, approximately one-third have signs of diabetic retinopathy.

Fortunately, there are several steps people with diabetes can take to prevent or minimize vision loss.

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

noraml eye and an eye with diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease caused by high blood sugar levels that damage the small blood vessels clustered within your retina. This leads to swelling or fluid leakage and can result in vision loss and even blindness.

Diabetic retinopathy also raises the risk of retinal detachment and/or glaucoma.

Because the early stages of diabetic retinopathy show no symptoms, many don't realize they have it until the disease has progressed.

If you have diabetes, you are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. To reduce your risk and protect your vision, schedule an eye exam with VisionMakers - Pittsburgh today.

What Are the Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy?

diabetic-retinopothy-oct-scan

As mentioned above, the early phase of diabetic retinopathy typically shows no symptoms. This is why it's important to have routine eye exams (all the more so if you have diabetes), as your eye doctor can detect diabetic retinopathy in its earlier stages before symptoms become apparent.

Symptoms of proliferative diabetic retinopathy include:
  • Blurred vision
  • Floaters
  • Double vision
  • Near vision problems
  • Seeing dark spots (scotomas)
  • Difficulty seeing at night

What are the Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy?

Non-Proliferative Retinopathy (early stage):
This occurs when small bulges–or microaneurysms–form in blood vessels and can leak fluid into the retina.

Proliferative Retinopathy (later phase):
This refers to abnormal vessel growth and leakage in the retina. This triggers a variety of vision problems such as blurriness, reduced field of vision, and even blindness.

If you have diabetes, VisionMakers - Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh offers diagnostic tests and treatment options to help preserve your vision. The earlier the diagnosis, the better the treatment outcome.

How Optometrists Diagnose Diabetic Retinopathy

  • Medical history

Your optometrist will ask about your medical history, including diabetes, as well as your family history of eye conditions.

  • Dilated pupil exam

Your optometrist will apply eye drops to dilate the pupils so they can see inside the eye and detect any issues.

  • Fluorescein angiography

This eye test uses a special dye and camera to look at blood flow in the retina and choroid.

  • Optical coherence tomography

This imaging method shows a cross-section of the retina and can indicate whether vessels are leaking fluid into the retina.

How to Treat Diabetic Retinopathy

senior man with diabetic retinopathy

Treatment begins with managing blood sugar levels and diabetes. This means eating a healthy diet, increasing physical activity, and taking whatever diabetes medication has been prescribed.

Other treatments will depend on the stage or severity of the disease. If caught early, only blood sugar management may be necessary.

However, if you're in a more advanced stage of the diseases, treatment options may include:
  • Eye medications. Steroid and Anti-VEGF treatments can stop inflammation and prevent the formation of new blood vessels.
  • Laser surgery. Reduces the proliferation of abnormal blood vessels and swelling in the retina.
  • Vitrectomy. If you have proliferative diabetic retinopathy, you may need an eye surgery called vitrectomy. This procedure removes scar tissue, blood or fluid, and some of the vitreous gel so light rays can better focus on the retina.

I will start by saying this is kind of a double sided review. Suzanne was not kind and had a very sn... ooty attitude. She sounds like she has no personality but the other office members were so kind to me about picking out glasses options. Jessica was always my go to, but Jake seems to be a great addition to the office. Not everyone can be perfect, but she really needs to watch her language in front of customers. Suzanne swore a lot and there were children there.

I came in towards the end of the day and Jake was kind enough to take his time and explain what cont... acts I could order. He was very knowledgeable and helped me understand my lens options as well. Keep up the good work!

This place is great! The staff was helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Very good attitudes. Profe... ssional. Clean. They have a good selection of frames/sunglasses to choose from. Lots of options. Sarah helped me schedule my appointment. She was very pleasant and helped me decipher my insurance. I left with all questions answered! Will definitely recommend.

I first received care from Visionmakers Pittsburgh a few days after they first opened their doors he... re, in early 2000 something. The fact that I still receive care yearly and sometimes more, is a testament to their high quality of professionalism, staff attitude, patient care and product. I have no other affiliation with any professional group in this area with whom I have remained with entirely because of their high quality of care and attitude. My visual issues are not particularly common, have worn glasses since I was 3 yo and now at age 78 there are several serious visual complication. On these more serious issues they do not provide the direct service but they are affiliated with these other medical groups and have done follow up exams to help tract the procedures performed by the Opthamologists. Then as my lens need changed because of these procedure they are always there to fully assist me. You all r appreciated.

Everyone including the doctor went out of their way to make my hubby, my daughter and myself very co... mfortable. Even fixed the nose pads on my glasses. Very friendly, informative and easy to be with. We are sure to let our friends know as well.

My family and I have been using vision-makers since they came to Pgh.We are very happy with the prof... essionalism of the entire staff. They are a 1-stop shop, very good and thorough exam, Dr on staff, the selection of eyewear is impressive they have a large selection of styles, which most are covered by my insurance. there is no pressure to sell upgrades or more expensive glasses, although if you want that they have it. Their Lab is located in Dayton Ohio, and the best part is they are a UNION SHOP.. Patrick McMahon Retired - ATU-Local 85

Through eye exams , great selection of frames for any activity plus great service.

My husband wanted to change to Visionmakers and I was extremely hesitant leaving my current optometr... ist of 15 years. I was pleasantly surprised! Everyone is professional and thorough. We've been going there for 3 years now and I never thought twice about looking back. I can't say enough good things about this practice. This is probably the second review I've ever written. It's not something I do often, but they deserve praise. They are fantastic and I recommend them highly.
